Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant with 3–5 years of accounting experience to join our growing law firm. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting the month-end close process, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles and firm policies. Experience in a professional services or legal environment is preferred but not required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and record journal entries, account reconciliations, and adjusting entries.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
- Reconcile bank accounts, trust accounts (if applicable), credit card statements, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Process accounts payable and assist with accounts receivable as needed.
- Monitor cash flow and prepare daily or weekly cash reports.
- Assist with attorney expense reimbursements and corporate credit card reconciliations.
- Support payroll processing by reconciling payroll reports and related general ledger entries.
- Prepare financial statements and management reports for leadership.
- Assist with annual audits, tax preparation, and compliance reporting.
- Ensure adherence to internal controls, accounting standards, and firm policies.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and operational efficiencies.
- Collaborate with attorneys, administrative staff, and external vendors to resolve accounting-related issues.
- Perform other accounting and finance duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and basic financial analysis.
- Experience with accounting software and ERP systems; legal accounting software experience is a plus.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a law firm or other professional services environment.
- Familiarity with legal billing, client trust accounting (IOLTA), and timekeeping systems.
- Experience supporting annual audits and tax preparation.
- CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification is a plus.
